0

In a historic development for Indian chess, Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh have stormed into the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025, setting up an all-Indian summit clash. This is the first time that two Indian women have reached the final of a World Cup event, underlining the country’s growing prowess in the international chess arena.

Koneru Humpy, a former World Rapid Champion, displayed her experience and calm under pressure to beat her Chinese opponent in a closely contested semi-final. On the other board, teenage prodigy Divya Deshmukh stunned yet another top-seeded Chinese player to earn her spot in the final.

Chess legend Viswanathan Anand lauded the achievement, saying, “It’s a proud day for Indian chess. We are witnessing the rise of a new era.”

The final match is set to be held later this week and has already drawn global attention. Analysts believe this milestone will significantly boost women’s chess in India and inspire a new generation of players.

Nation Commemorates 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas with Solemn Tributes

0

India today marked the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, honouring the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil conflict. Ceremonies were held across the country, with the central event taking place at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and top military officials paid floral tributes to the fallen soldiers. The occasion was also observed in schools, colleges, and public institutions nationwide with patriotic fervour.

Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s victory in “Operation Vijay,” a military campaign launched to drive out infiltrators from strategic peaks in the Kargil sector. Over 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the high-altitude battle, which remains one of the most defining moments in India’s military history.

“Their courage, valour, and sacrifice continue to inspire every Indian,” the Prime Minister said in a social media post.

India Extends $565 Million Credit Line to Maldives Amid Strengthening Ties

0

In a significant diplomatic move, India has offered a fresh line of credit worth $565 million to the Maldives during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing state visit. The financial package is aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across key sectors including defence, infrastructure, renewable energy, and development.

The agreement was reached following high-level discussions between PM Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. Apart from the credit line, both nations have agreed to initiate formal negotiations toward a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a new chapter in regional trade integration.

Officials said the credit will be directed primarily toward sustainable infrastructure and housing projects in the island nation, alongside maritime security collaborations in the Indian Ocean region. The move comes at a time when India is actively seeking to balance China’s growing influence in South Asia through strategic investments and diplomatic engagements.

The announcement has been welcomed by strategic observers who see it as a reaffirmation of New Delhi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. PM Modi is expected to attend several bilateral engagements before concluding the visit.

England Starts Day 4 of Old Trafford Test with Commanding 186-Run Lead Over India

0

England will resume Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford with a dominant 186-run lead over India, having finished Day 3 at an imposing 544 for 7 in 135 overs. The hosts took complete control of the match thanks to a sublime 150 from Joe Root and a gritty unbeaten 77 from skipper Ben Stokes.

Replying to India’s first-innings total of 358, England’s top order fired in unison. Openers Zak Crawley (84) and Ben Duckett (94) set the tone with a rapid 166-run stand before Root anchored the innings with a near-flawless century. The former England captain’s innings saw him overtake multiple cricketing greats to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history, just behind Sachin Tendulkar.

Stokes, who earlier registered a five-wicket haul, continued his all-round brilliance with the bat. Though briefly retiring hurt due to cramps, the England skipper returned to add crucial runs and was unbeaten at stumps. His innings frustrated the Indian bowlers, who struggled for breakthroughs on a flat pitch.

India’s bowling attack looked toothless for large parts of the day. Ravindra Jadeja (2/100) and Washington Sundar (2/86) picked up a couple of wickets each, but the pace unit failed to sustain pressure. Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless, while captain Shubman Gill’s field placements and bowling changes drew sharp criticism for allowing England to cruise past 500.

The series currently stands at 2-1 in England’s favour, and a win here would seal the five-Test series for the hosts. India, on the other hand, face an uphill task of salvaging the match and avoiding a series loss.

Day 4 is expected to begin under clear skies, giving England ample opportunity to stretch their lead further or declare and unleash their bowlers on a fatigued Indian side.

Score Summary:

  • India 1st Innings: 358 all out (114.1 overs)

  • England 1st Innings: 544/7 (135 overs)

    • Joe Root: 150

    • Ben Duckett: 94

    • Zak Crawley: 84

    • Ben Stokes: 77*

    • Ravindra Jadeja: 2/100

    • Washington Sundar: 2/86

Lead: England by 186 runs with 3 wickets in hand

Mercury Soars in Guwahati as City Reels Under Intense Heatwave

With temperatures soaring and humidity levels remaining oppressive, Guwahati on Tuesday found itself in the grip of a punishing heatwave that disrupted daily life across the city. The maximum temperature touched 33°C but the “feels like” index shot up to over 46°C due to the stifling humidity, forcing many residents to avoid venturing outdoors.

The India Meteorological Department reported that cloudy skies and stagnant wind conditions throughout the day added to the discomfort, while light rain forecast for the evening is expected to bring only marginal relief. The sweltering heat has led to visible disruptions in both professional and personal routines.

At the bustling Fancy Bazar area, shopkeeper Pranjal Das said he had to start his day early to beat the heat. “By 10 am, the sun was already unbearable. Business has been slow because people are just not stepping out. It feels like a furnace outside,” he said.

Across the city, households with elderly members are particularly affected. Tarun Baruah, a retired Assam government employee who now spends most of his time at home in the Uzan Bazar area, said, “Even inside the house, there’s no real relief. The fan just pushes around hot air. I haven’t seen a day this uncomfortable in a long time.”

Travelers were also hit hard. At the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Guwahati, Krishna Baruah, a schoolteacher waiting for a bus to Jorhat, said she had been stranded in poor conditions. “The fans at the waiting area are not working, and the concrete floor radiates heat. It feels like I’m standing in an oven,” she said while trying to cool off with a paper fan.

The heat has also affected student attendance in several institutions. Deepali Bhuyan, a college student from Zoo Road, decided not to attend her classes today. “I just couldn’t gather the energy to go out in this weather. It’s mentally and physically draining,” she said.

According to meteorologists, Guwahati is experiencing the compounded effect of post-monsoon humidity and a dry spell that is causing heat to linger. While light rain is predicted in parts of the city during the late evening hours, overall relief may not be immediate.

Doctors and health officials have urged residents to take precautions, including staying indoors during peak afternoon hours, wearing loose cotton clothes, drinking water frequently, and avoiding outdoor physical activity unless absolutely necessary.

With the Asia Cup scheduled to be hosted in Bihar in late August and thousands expected to travel through Guwahati in the coming weeks, concerns have been raised over the city’s preparedness to handle persistent heat spells, especially at public transit hubs and government facilities.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Borjhar has said that more consistent showers are likely later in the week, which may help bring down temperatures temporarily.

Olympic bronze medallist and Assam’s very own Lovlina Borgohain and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen have been included in the 20-member Indian boxing contingent for the upcoming World Boxing Championships in Liverpool. The tournament will be held from September 4 to 14 and marks the inaugural edition under the new global governing body, World Boxing.

Women’s Squad:
Meenakshi Hooda (48kg), Nikhat Zareen (51kg), Sakshi (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sanju Khatri (60kg), Neeraj Phogat (60kg), Sanamacha Chanu (70kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Pooja Rani (80kg), Nupur Sheoran (80+ kg)
Men’s Squad:
Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Pawan Bartwal (55kg), Sachin Siwach Jr (60kg), Abhinash Jamwal (65kg), Hitesh Gulia (70kg), Sumit Kundu (75kg), Lakshya Chahar (80kg), Jugnoo Ahlawat (85kg), Harsh Chaudhary (90kg), Narender Berwal (90+ kg)

The Indian squad was finalized following a rigorous week-long assessment at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. This edition of the championships will be historic, as it is the first time male and female boxers will compete side-by-side in an Olympic-style format for the title of World Boxing Champion, with 10 weight categories for each gender.

Both Borgohain and Zareen had missed the national championships earlier this year — Zareen due to injury and Borgohain after being left out by her state unit amid internal disputes. However, both returned to action at the Elite Women’s Boxing Tournament held in Hyderabad earlier in July. They were also absent from the World Cup in Astana.

India’s men’s squad features seasoned names such as Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal in the 90+ kg category, along with World Cup champions Hitesh Gulia and Abhinash Jamwal.

Men’s Hockey Team to Tour Australia Ahead of Asia Cup

0

The Indian men’s hockey team will head to Australia in mid-August for a crucial four-match bilateral series that will serve as a tune-up ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. The matches are scheduled to take place at the Perth Hockey Stadium on August 15, 16, 19, and 21.

India, currently ranked eighth in the world, will take on sixth-ranked Australia in what is expected to be a highly competitive series. The two teams have shared a closely contested rivalry in recent years, with Australia securing narrow 3–2 wins in both legs of their recent FIH Pro League 2024–25 faceoff in Europe. However, India made headlines earlier this year by defeating Australia 3–2 at the Paris Olympics — their first Olympic win over the Kookaburras since 1972.

Despite India’s recent improvements, Australia continues to have the historical advantage in head-to-head contests, having won 35 of the 51 matches played since 2013. India has claimed victory in nine, while seven games have ended in draws.

The upcoming series carries added significance for India as it precedes the Asia Cup 2025, to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7. The tournament will act as a qualifier for the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2026, making the Australia tour a vital component of India’s preparation phase.

Indian chief coach Craig Fulton stressed the importance of the tour, stating that the matches, though friendly in nature, will provide a valuable test against one of the world’s top sides. “This tour comes at a crucial time for us, just ahead of the Asia Cup in Bihar. Playing against a team like Australia will test us in all aspects — both on the ball and off it — and that is exactly what we need to sharpen up before a major tournament,” Fulton said.

He added that the team has just concluded a focused 10-day training block, and spirits are high within the squad. “Our plan is to use the first two games for selection trials. The final two matches will be played with the squad that will head to the Asia Cup. We are moving forward with a clear intent — to win in Bihar and secure our place in the 2026 World Cup.”

With preparations in full swing, the Australian tour is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s final lineup and strategy for the high-stakes continental competition.

80 New Faces Join BJP in Mizoram as Party Expands Statewide Presence

In a fresh boost to its organisational strength in Mizoram, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday welcomed 80 new members into its ranks at a formal induction ceremony held at Atal Bhavan, the party’s state headquarters. The event was presided over by BJP’s Mizoram unit president and MLA, Dr. K. Beichhua, who highlighted the party’s commitment to development and inclusive governance.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Beichhua said the addition of 80 new individuals reflected a growing trust in the BJP’s vision and leadership across Mizoram. He urged the newly-inducted members to uphold the party’s foundational principle — putting the nation first, the party second, and self last.

Dr. Beichhua credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for inspiring people across communities to join the BJP. He emphasised that the party remains committed to working for every section of society with fairness, transparency, and respect for Mizoram’s unique cultural identity.

Calling on the youth to take an active role in public life, Beichhua said a future BJP-led government in the state would prioritise employment generation and fair recruitment in public services, including police and other government departments. “We are not here just to win elections, but to bring real development that benefits the common people,” he said.

Many of the new entrants cited the BJP’s focus on development, responsive administration, and welfare programmes as key reasons behind their decision to join. They said that the party’s promises are not merely political slogans but are being translated into visible progress on the ground.

The party also noted that its support base is expanding beyond urban pockets into rural areas, and that the induction of new members signals increased momentum ahead of future electoral contests.

Centre Moves to Extend President’s Rule in Manipur for Six More Months

A statutory resolution seeking Parliament’s approval to extend President’s Rule in Manipur has been formally submitted in the Rajya Sabha and admitted by the Chair. The Central government has initiated the process for a six-month extension starting August 13, 2025, as the northeastern state continues to face ongoing unrest.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also holds the Cooperation portfolio, has issued the notice for the resolution, which is expected to be taken up for discussion next week once time is allocated by the Business Advisory Committee. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat confirmed the admission of the resolution, which reads: “That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the 13 February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13 August, 2025.”

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Since then, the state has remained without an elected government, with the administration being run directly by the Centre through the Governor.

Despite the BJP’s repeated attempts to stitch together a new government in the state, the political deadlock has continued. Meitei and Naga legislators have reportedly led a month-long campaign pushing for the reinstallation of an elected government, but a breakthrough has so far remained elusive.

Manipur has been reeling under ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The prolonged unrest has claimed the lives of at least 260 people and displaced thousands, many of whom continue to live in relief camps under difficult conditions.

With no signs of a sustainable political consensus or resolution to the ethnic crisis, the Centre has now deemed it necessary to extend President’s Rule to maintain administrative continuity and security oversight in the sensitive region.

The resolution, once passed by both Houses of Parliament, will ensure that the President’s Rule remains in force until February 13, 2026, unless revoked earlier upon the formation of a stable government.

Guwahati Airport Sees Strong Passenger and Flight Growth in First Quarter of FY26

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati has reported robust growth in passenger footfall and aircraft movements during the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year, indicating a steady recovery and expansion in regional air travel.

Managed by the Adani Group, the airport recorded a 15 percent year-on-year increase in passenger traffic between April and June 2025, according to a statement issued on Friday. The number of flights operating in and out of the airport also saw double-digit growth, signaling improved connectivity and rising travel demand.

The surge in traffic has been attributed to increased connectivity with major Indian cities. Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru emerged as the top three destinations for flyers using the Guwahati airport, reflecting consistent demand on these routes.

The airport authority said the upward trend demonstrates the resilience and growing importance of Guwahati as a key aviation hub in the Northeast. The improved figures come amid ongoing infrastructure upgrades and efforts to streamline operations for better passenger experience.

Officials noted that investments in airport infrastructure and enhanced airline services have contributed to the steady growth, while increased tourism and business activity in Assam and the surrounding region have played a key role in boosting air traffic.

With the festival season and more tourism-linked activity expected in the coming quarters, the airport management is optimistic that the growth momentum will continue in the second half of the fiscal year
